The real average hiking speed is about 5 km/h (3 mph) on flat, but that's a ceiling, not a plan. Here are honest pace bands and the pace to actually plan for.

Ask the internet how fast people hike and you get one number: three miles an hour. It is not the wrong number, exactly. It is the wrong number to build a day around.
That figure, about 5 km/h, is how fast a fit person walks on flat, even ground with nothing on their back. It is the fastest you will move, not the speed you will average. Add climbing, rough ground, a pack, and the afternoon in your legs, and every estimate built on 5 km/h runs short. Here is the pace to actually plan for, in bands you can locate yourself in.

Beginners, or anyone on a first big day, sit at the low end of every band, commonly 2 to 3 km/h (1.5 to 2 mph) once climbing and rests are folded in. So "average hiking speed" runs from over 6 km/h to under 2, before fitness or weather have their say. The spread is the whole point. The only pace worth knowing is the one for the ground actually under your feet.
Why your pace is almost always slower
Four things pull you off the flat baseline, and they stack.
The climb sets the pace, not the distance. Once a trail tips uphill for any length of time, kilometres stop being the useful unit. Height takes over. This is why the alpine clubs plan in metres of ascent per hour. The German norm, codified in the standard DIN 33466:2004-05 (the basis for the walking times printed on German-language trail signs), assumes 300 m of ascent, 500 m of descent, and 4 km of horizontal distance per hour; the Swiss Alpine Club uses a fitter 400 m ascent and 800 m descent. On a steep pull you may cover barely 1.5 km/h on the map while working hard, because the work is the 400 vertical metres, not the ground distance.
The pack drags, most of all uphill. Load carriage has a real, measured cost. The Pandolf equation, the standard model for the energy cost of walking under load, shows energy use rising with carried weight, speed, and gradient together (Journal of Applied Physiology, retrieved 2026-08-27). A widely repeated field rule of thumb puts the cost at roughly 10 seconds per mile for every 1% of your bodyweight carried, so a 70 kg hiker with a 10 kg pack loses well over a minute a mile before the terrain speaks. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a law, but the direction is not in doubt.
Fitness fades over the day. Your pace at the trailhead is not your pace six hours in. The norms and Naismith alike describe a steady walker, and few people stay steady once the distance runs past what they usually do. Plan the back half of a long day slower than the front.
Altitude thins everything. Above roughly 2,000 to 2,500 m the air holds less oxygen and aerobic capacity falls, so the same climb costs more time, and the effect grows the higher you go, sharply if you have not acclimatised. There is no clean multiplier for this. Add margin on any high route and treat a strong sea-level pace as irrelevant at 3,000 m.
Planning pace is not walking pace
This is the idea that keeps you out of trouble: the pace you hit and the pace you plan with are different numbers.
Walking pace is what your GPS shows while you are moving. It flatters you, because it ignores every stop. Planning pace is total distance over total elapsed time, breaks included, and on a real hill day it runs 30 to 50% slower. Plan with the slower one. Take a band from the table, work out the day, then set your latest safe turnaround by a pace slower again.
How to find your own pace
Published averages give you a first estimate. Your own data makes it real.
- Time two or three known routes door to door, total elapsed time, noting distance and ascent.
- Work out the Naismith or alpine-club estimate for those same routes.
- Find your personal factor. If a route Naismith calls 4 hours takes you 5, you run about 1.25 times the estimate. Apply that until you have better data.
