About Datum Heights

Datum Heights is an editorial desk. We write about the world’s great hiking and alpinism routes: what a place is actually like to walk, how hard it really is, and who it suits, so you can decide well before you go.

We are not a booking site and we earn nothing from where you choose to walk. The writing is the product: honest reconnaissance, sourced carefully, with the difficult parts named rather than smoothed over. When we can’t verify a figure, we say so.

How we read a route

A single difficulty grade can’t hold everything that decides your day, so we read every route on five separate axes (physical effort, technical ground, exposure, environment, and navigation), and we’re explicit about which numbers are measured and which are our own editorial assessment. It’s the honest way to answer the only question that matters: is this one for me?

The reconnaissance is one half of the job. The tools we’re building, for hiking time, turnaround, and difficulty, are the other. Both exist to help you prepare, never to sell you a trip.
